dark&drab to fresh&bright (powder room makover)

First, let me explain how the bathroom became dark: A couple years ago I fell in love with the “brown/turquoise” color palate (and I still love it).  So, I wanted to experiment with that new color duo in my bathroom which, at that time, was an awful yellow color.

So, I thought that painting it a dark brown and adding pops of turquoise color would be a nice, dramatic, and “dirt-hiding” color scheme since I had 4 younger messy kiddies.

Now, I am asking myself: WHAT POSSESED ME TO PAINT MY BATHROOM the color of POOP!!! LOL

Cause, that’s what I feel about it now….it feels ugly, depressing, and just icky!

I needed a change!

Recently, we’ve been on a mission to wash out as much “dark” as we can from our home. We just did our whole downstairs and I am so giddy and excited about the results. It’s amazing what happens to your spirits when more light is allowed to reflect in your home.

My goal is to bring more light, and brightness into our dwelling overall. I want it to reflect better who we are, our personalities….without worrying about following the rules. We’re just having fun giving our home some long-overdue TLC!

So, back to our current project: getting rid of “poop brown bathroom”

My desire was to brighten up the space and give a cottage feel to it.

here are some before pics (don’t judge too hard)….for some reason my brown looks different on camera. It’s actually a deeper color….whatever, who cares…it’s ugly!

*disclaimer: hubby took pics and forgot to clean up beforehand, so ignore the clutter! 😉

 Time for demolition!!!

….first we ripped out our “builder-grade” vanity and lights, and took down the large towel rack. I have finally moved on from “using big towels to decorate your bathroom wall” stage.

So, I wanted a fresh and happy color that brought me peace and was fun! When I was googling color palates, this color scheme just kept catching my eyes and jumping out at me…and I knew this had to be used in this room!

But, I didn’t want to overdo the tangerine accents, since it was such a small space….however,  I did know I wanted to have some small pops of this fabulous color!

and here is are the glorious first moments and first brush strokes to cover up all that  darkness!!

I gotta say, it felt very therapeutic….seriously.

We painted with the color: Tide Pools from Behr Paint and it covered the brown nicely in two coats

………….

 ok…….drum roll….

The finished product!!!!!

ok, the details……
so  we went shopping for  new vanity, lights and a mirror! After 10 years, it was time to upgrade.

And, hubby used his awesome skills to add a fun back splash of which I LOVE!!!

We picked these lights because they felt more like illuminated candle jars, instead just light bulbs.

I wanted a back splash that was bright, light and warm. I can;t tell you how overwhelming it is to pick tiles in an aisle at home depot with THOUSANDS of tiles! sheesh! But, like the results!

He did a great job, didn’t he!! Go hubby!

Ok, I just fell in LOVE with this artists’ print when I found it, the colors in it and the mood  just make me feel all warm, springy and happy.

and I adore my bird cage/photo display!!! I was ecstatic when I came across this little treasure at the store….it’s so FUN, unique and different!

Ok, if you haven’t noticed….I have this thing for birds…..I really do love them!Oh, and the Peach market candle from Bath and Body works is A. MAZ. ING!!!!

k, so I must interrupt this little room tour for just one moment as I plug this amazing book: “One Thousand Gifts”…a MUST read!!
can I just say that this little rug is one of my favorite pieces to this room, I love the warm tangerine color and the chevron design! love love love! of course, it will never ever stay this straight again…it’ll probably be all rolled up under the sink by the end of tomorrow, from all the kiddie traffic…but, that’s ok…that’s why I have these perfectly staged pics, to make me feel like the room will ALWAYS appear this way! 😉

Seriously, Can there be a happier flower then a “Gerbera daisy??” Nah, I didn’t think so!

and there, you have it!

BEFORE:

DRAB….bleh!

AFTER

My new, fresh, cheery,  and happy bathroom…..if you come over and can’t  find me tomorrow, I will probably be hiding away in there…. locked inside….just admiring all my happy stuff !! 🙂

FAB!!!!
