I wrote this poem in a dark season of my life when there was an oppression that tried to bring me down in shame and guilt and condemnation and despair. It felt like there was a fire and windstorm of accusation, rejection, unfairness, ridicule and circumstance that was consuming and crushing me to smithereens.
It was in this season I went inward, because sometimes we just need to tuck ourselves away deep into a cave and turn down the world’s noise so we can hear the only ONE that matters.
The only ONE that heals.
God met me in this sacred cave.
I found myself in the story of Elijah in 1 Kings. I saw a fellow sojourner running from his wilderness, and ready to give up and drown into his pit of despair.
I saw the storm that surrounded him.
I then witnessed how God broke through the stronghold of his depression with only a whisper…a still small voice within his cave.
And God gave him courage through His whisper.
God called him out of his cave, and out of his night of weariness to a new mission of HOPE. Hope within his wilderness. God called him into a new dawn….
…with the power of His whisper, Elijah became brave.
Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.
(1 Kings 19:11-12)
GOD lifted him out of the darkest valley and carried him back to light with a breath of voice that has the power to birth HOPE into our greatest and deepest cave of darkness.
With so many voices and lies out there that demand our hearts, our identity and our souls…. we must position ourselves to listen to that still gentle whisper that holds enough power to obliterate the loudest lies that choke us of life.
His Truth does not need to shout, because His truth has the power to resurrect.
His whisper redeems our hope.
His whisper has the power to rename us and remake us.
His whisper is near the brokenhearted.
His whisper is as close as our very own breath.
He breathes and restores us with His Truth.
We are called HIS beloved.
His still small voice awakens our weary hearts to new Hope.
When your world is shaken by disaster and calamity and the enemy shouts your demise.
His Whisper speaks LIFE….
His whisper says, “WE ARE HIS.“
