Kicking off the year with smiles!

The kiddos woke up with a refreshing joyful spirit to start the new year off (sure wish every morning could be like that). I gotta say: God bless summer breaks! The time off from structured learning really does energize, and rejuvenate us. I feel excited about a new year with my 3rd grader, my 1st grader, my p-k’er and my little 2 year old (who likes to keep things interesting);-). Can I say that there is just something special and fun about NEW school supplies? Why is it that fresh unopened glue is soooo much better than last years ol’ crusty Elmers bottle? And let us not forget the unforgettable waxy smell of new, never been used crayons, and the sound of new crispy pencils being sharpened (until the sound of the pencil sharpener becomes annoying, and makes you go a little batty). These are all the things that I got to wake up to. The kids got to open their new school boxes filled with colorful pencils and new erasers. Their eyes lit up and they got to discover hidden surprises in their backpacks! Isabella’s favorite was her horse cd-rom game, Ethan’s was his pocket microscope, Helaina’s was her rainbow paints…and little Ashy’s was his new box of markers (which, undoubtedly, ends up more on his hands than the paper…thank God for washables). Oh, and among all this excitement, we did manage to get a little “work” done. However, I must share what the newest edition to the school table was for this year…..Ashton! He is soooo cute and it’s a good thing that he is soooo cute, because he is something else! He wants so much to be included, and we do let him join in. But, we are still trying to work around his itty -bitty little attention span:-)….I think that the lesson we learned today, and will be learning allllll year is how to work with distractions (hey, that is quite valuable!). Isabella is his little helper, and the one who gets to put all the marker tops back on (thanks Bella)! I thank God for the gift of homeschooling and to see my family work as a team :-). It is a privilege….(I just have to remind myself sometimes, like when the team needs a referee:-). Thus, the adventure begins with a new school year….we will keep you posted!!
